FAQ: Your Questions Answered

  • At what age can blepharoplasty be considered?
    As soon as it becomes an aesthetic or functional concern. Genetic fat pouches can be treated as early as 25-30 years old. Age-related skin laxity is generally addressed from age 40-45 onward.
  • Is the procedure painful?
    Blepharoplasty is only mildly uncomfortable. A sensation of tightness or temporary dry eye may occur in the days following the procedure, easily relieved with simple pain relievers and artificial tears.
  • What type of anesthesia is required?
    An isolated upper blepharoplasty is performed under simple or potentiated local anesthesia (light sedation) as an outpatient. Lower blepharoplasty or combined procedures (all four eyelids / brow lift) are most often performed under conscious sedation or light general anesthesia.
  • How long is the social downtime?
    Plan for 7 to 10 days. Bruising and swelling fade progressively. Wearing sunglasses lets you resume social activities from the first few days.
  • When are the final results visible?
    Your eyes open up as soon as the sutures are removed (around day 6-7). A near-final result is visible at 6 weeks, and complete scar maturation is reached between 3 and 6 months.
  • Can I get sick leave / a work-incapacity certificate for this procedure?
    No. In accordance with medical law and ethics, purely aesthetic procedures do not entitle you to a work-incapacity certificate or sick leave. The post-operative recovery and social downtime period (generally 7 to 10 days) must be planned and taken by the patient during personal time off.

Aesthetic and Functional Eyelid and Eyebrow Surgery

1. Principles and Objectives of the Procedure

The procedure aims to correct imperfections of the upper and/or lower eyelids, as well as the position of the brow, by removing excess skin, redistributing or removing fat herniation, and retensioning the muscle-aponeurotic structures. The goal is a lasting morphological improvement while preserving the eye's protective function.

2. Normal Post-Operative Course

  • Swelling and bruising of variable severity, lasting 7 to 15 days.
  • Watery eyes, increased light sensitivity (photophobia), and temporary dry eye.
  • A temporary inability to fully close the eyes during the first few days (mild reactive lagophthalmos).

3. Risks and Possible Complications

Although performed with maximum technical rigor by an expert practitioner, every surgical procedure carries a degree of risk:

  • Hematoma / hemorrhage: Rare, but may require rapid evacuation. A retro-bulbar hematoma is an exceptional complication requiring emergency treatment.
  • Infection: Exceptional at the eyelids, thanks to their rich blood supply.
  • Healing abnormalities: Hypertrophic scars, pigmentation changes, or small epidermal cysts at the suture points — most often temporary.
  • Temporary eye disturbances: Conjunctivitis, exposure keratitis linked to dryness, chemosis (swelling of the conjunctiva).
  • Ectropion / lower eyelid retraction: Downward eversion of the lower eyelid, prevented by precisely measured skin removal and treated, if needed, with massage or a secondary canthopexy.
  • Ptosis or residual asymmetry: Partial drooping of the upper eyelid (very rare), or a pre-existing asymmetry unmasked once the swelling subsides.

4. Legal Provisions & Belgian Taxation (VAT)

21% VAT applies: In accordance with Belgian tax law governing medical and surgical procedures (VAT Code, Art. 44, §1, 2°), any procedure or portion of a procedure that is purely aesthetic is mandatorily subject to 21% VAT, charged in addition to fees and hospitalization costs (if applicable).

5. Financial Framework for Revision Surgery (Touch-Ups)

Final healing is reached after a period of 12 to 18 months. No definitive surgical touch-up can be undertaken before this full tissue-stabilization period.

  • Terms for covering revisions: If a touch-up or revision surgery proves necessary later to correct a residual imperfection, all costs related to this new procedure (clinic/hospital fees, anesthetist's fees, consumables, operating room equipment, and surgical fees) remain entirely and exclusively the patient's responsibility.
  • The initial surgical procedure never constitutes a package that includes any future secondary procedures.
